Speed limits

This page gives an overview of speed limits in Belgium. This overview is for informational purposes only.

When a road sign indicates a speed limit, the general rule - shown below - no longer applies. An exception to this is the traffic sign C43 with the indication "90" on certain road types in the Flemish Region. Certain vehicle-specific speed restrictions continue to apply with this sign. That is why this situation is included in the table below.

Brussels Capital Region

Within built-up areas: 30 km/h

Outside built-up areas:

  MAM ≤ 3,5t 3,5t < MAM ≤ 7,5t Buses & coaches MAM > 7,5t except buses & coaches
Motorways 120* 90 90/100 90
Roads with at least 2 lanes per direction, with physically separated driving directions 120 90 90 90
Roads with at least 2 lanes per direction, with driving directions separated by road markings 70 70 70 70
Other roads 70 70 70 60

* The general speed limit of 120 km/h for vehicles whose MAM is less than or equal to 3.5 tonnes is practically never applied in the Brussels Capital Region, because a lower speed limit is imposed by  road signs almost everywhere.
